Emissions reporting structured by scope
Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 reporting helps organisations understand where greenhouse gas emissions arise across direct operations, purchased energy and wider business activity.
Switch Neutral helps organisations produce clear, evidence-led emissions reporting outputs with calculation schedules, methodology notes, reporting boundaries and assumptions recorded in a practical format.
Scope 1 emissions reporting
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organisation. These are often the first emissions sources reviewed because they are usually linked to internal records and operational activity.
- Company-owned or controlled fuel use
- Fleet fuel consumption
- Site fuels such as natural gas, gas oil or other fuels where applicable
- Refrigerant losses where relevant records are available
- Direct process emissions where applicable
Scope 2 emissions reporting
Scope 2 emissions relate to purchased energy, most commonly purchased electricity. Depending on the organisation, this can also include purchased heat, steam or cooling where relevant.
- Purchased electricity
- Purchased heat, steam or cooling where applicable
- Meter, invoice or supplier data mapping
- Location-based reporting where relevant
- Clear treatment of reporting period and site coverage
Scope 3 emissions reporting
Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions from wider business activity and the value chain. These can be important, but they are often more difficult to measure because they may rely on supplier data, travel records, waste records, spend data or assumptions.
Switch Neutral includes Scope 3 categories where they are relevant to the reporting purpose and where suitable evidence is available. Where data is estimated or incomplete, this should be recorded clearly.
- Business travel
- Employee commuting where data is available
- Waste and recycling
- Logistics, freight or courier activity
- Purchased goods and services where supplier or activity data is available
- Capital goods where relevant and evidenced
- Supplier emissions data where available
Scope 3 should be handled carefully
Scope 3 reporting is often where organisations accidentally overstate certainty. Some categories may be based on actual activity data, while others may rely on estimates, supplier responses or spend-based information.
Our approach is to include relevant Scope 3 categories where appropriate, explain the data basis clearly and avoid presenting estimated figures as if they are fully verified or complete.
Common emissions reporting challenges
- Missing invoices, fuel records or travel data
- Different data formats across sites or departments
- Unclear organisational boundaries
- Supplier data gaps
- Inconsistent assumptions from year to year
- Confusion between carbon reporting, SECR and wider sustainability claims
Our reporting approach
Switch Neutral uses an evidence-first approach to help organisations produce emissions reporting outputs that are clear, traceable and suitable for internal review.
- Define the reporting boundary and reporting period
- Identify relevant Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 categories
- Collect and map supporting evidence
- Apply relevant DEFRA and DESNZ conversion factors
- Prepare scope-level calculation schedules
- Record assumptions, exclusions and limitations
- Produce reporting outputs and supporting evidence packs
How this connects to carbon footprint reporting
Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions reporting often forms the structure of a wider business carbon footprint report. The carbon footprint report brings the scope calculations together into a fuller reporting output, including methodology notes, evidence mapping and executive summaries.
How this connects to SECR
SECR reporting also uses emissions information, but it has a specific statutory reporting context for qualifying organisations. If you need statutory reporting support, see our SECR reporting support page.
What we do not provide
- We do not provide assurance, verification or certification
- We do not provide carbon neutral certification
- We do not provide net zero certification
- We do not claim that Scope 3 data is complete where evidence is limited
- We do not replace legal, audit or statutory filing advice
Best-practice position
For many organisations, Scope 1 and Scope 2 provide the strongest starting point. Relevant Scope 3 categories can then be added where the data quality supports a useful and defensible reporting output.
Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 reporting FAQs
What are Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions?
Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from purchased energy. Scope 3 emissions are other relevant indirect emissions from wider business activity and the value chain.
Does Switch Neutral report all Scope 3 emissions as standard?
No. Scope 3 emissions are included where relevant and where suitable data is available. We help organisations identify appropriate categories, collect evidence and record assumptions or limitations.
Can Scope 1 and Scope 2 be reported without Scope 3?
Yes. Many organisations begin with Scope 1 and Scope 2 reporting before expanding into relevant Scope 3 categories as data quality improves.
What evidence is needed for emissions reporting?
Evidence can include energy invoices, fuel records, vehicle data, refrigerant records, business travel data, waste data, supplier data and other operational records relevant to the agreed reporting scope.
Does Scope 3 have to be perfect?
Scope 3 data is often less complete than Scope 1 and Scope 2 data. The important point is to explain the data basis, assumptions and limitations clearly rather than overstating certainty.
Does Switch Neutral verify emissions reports?
No. We do not provide assurance, verification or certification. Our service focuses on producing evidence-led emissions reporting outputs, methodology notes and calculation schedules.
